"Sound non sound" is a 15 minutes long session of samples, toy beats and synthetic waves that travels back in time to investigate some of the unexplainable mysteries of the recent Italian past, made of disappearing aeroplanes and exploding train stations by the hand of no one.A deeply describing music that manages to stimulate undefined images and shapes to the mind of the listener.
I've first heard TELEFONO BALAFONO a few years ago on a (now)preistoric myspace website and i almost fell from my chair. A raw and plastic collection of music compositions recorded on a "broken 4 track cassette recorder" as stated by the artist that mixes unknown keyboards and drum machines with a no wave twist that for the time of the recordings was already predicting the economical-ethical crisis we're living in the now. Each fragment doesn't exceed the 3 minutes of lenght creating short a…
"Known testimonies on the unknown" is based on how you can relate, adapt and use sounds or languages of unknown places , in this case, unknown found sounds, known but forgotten sounds and field recordings of people talking a language I do not understand.
The world first learned of unknown housewife/mother/pharmacist/electronic experimentalist Ursula Bogner's work in 2008. Since then, her identity has been surrounded by rumors, her graphic work has been exhibited (CEACC, Strasbourg, France, 2011 and elsewhere) and her compositional instructions have been performed (by Mo Loschelder, Andrew Pekler, Kassian Troyer, Jan Jelinek, among others). The release of Sonne = Blackbox brings together all of these aspects in one CD and book: compiled by Andrew…
""stunden" is a unique record. it sounds new and unprecedented. this is instrumental music: no one sings or speaks, yet it tells stories from the present, writing them in the wind. in twelve miniatures with titles such as "liebe", "das eine" and "country", hans-joachim roedelius (cluster / harmonia) and stefan schneider (to rococo rot / mapstation) unfold images that come across poetically, glorifying tranquility. despite the use of synthesizers and amplifiers, they are closer to the text…
Rufen is the second installment in a trilogy of Qluster music, following on from the Fragen (BB 076CD/LP) studio album. In four impressive live recordings, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Onnen Bock unfold aural panoramas which can only be described, in the truest sense of the word, as fantastic. Had Claude Debussy not already composed 'Prelude To The Afternoon Of A Faun,' then Qluster would have been ideally placed to do so, their transparency and polymorphism so reminiscent of his high Impression…
LP version on 180 gram vinyl. Of all the Hans-Joachim Roedelius solo releases, this is the one which most closely resembles the work of Cluster. Wasser Im Wind sees Roedelius use a wide variety of musical and sonic ingredients hitherto associated with Cluster, almost as if he sought to erect a monument to the group. Right from the word "go," the familiar sound of the Drummer One rhythm machine can be discerned on the opening track, like a wood gnome crashing his way through the shire; then we he…
"Take the ghost train from Los Mochis to Veracruz and travel cross country, coast to coast, Pacific to Atlantic. Ride the rhythm of the rails on board the Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México (FNM) and the music of a journey that has now passed into history." El Tren Fantasma, (The Ghost Train), is Chris Watson's 4th solo album for Touch, and his first since Weather Report in 2003, which was named as one of the albums you should hear before you die in The Guardian. A Radio programme was br…
Finally, available now as double vinyl set this is a must for fans of both of these legendary sonic travelers: Steven Stapleton & Colin Potter twist SUNN O)))’s 2000 album “ØØVOID” inside out on Nurse’s dissection table. These are NWW versions of Sunn's ØØVOID LP, and first appeared as a bonus disc on the 2008 Japan edition of the album; Stephen O'Malley has now dusted them down for a dedicated vinyl release on his Ideologic Organ imprint. It's a clash of the titans, yes, but the results a…
CD REISSUE: With the influx of modern synth wielders comes a look backwards at electronic pioneers from the 70s and 80s. Jürgen Müller is one such visionary getting the reissue treatment – his 1981 album Science of the Sea, which was originally limited to 100 copies, and it is again available via Digitalis label. “Sea Bed Meditation” is a simple, gorgeous meditation on all things watery. Its intimacy recalls Hans-Joachim Roedelius’ minimal bedroom aesthetic as well as Raymond Scott’s early groun…
*Genuinely jawdropping archival reissue from the Forced Nostalgia label, the first time on vinyl for this unique album recorded in the mid 80's using analogue synths, found objects & DIY tape loops, drawing lines between the the postpunk movement and into the more introspective sounds that would go on to typify so much electronic music of the early nineties* Over twenty three years ago, Pelican Daughters forged a dour and dubbed out brand of post-punk and proto-ambient which would be hail…
The 1987 debut of one of the great forgotten bands of the post punk, dark-industrial era remastered at Dubplates & Mastering and reissued in a beautiful gatefold edition by Forced Nostalgia - 500 copies only* Pump were Andrew Cox and David Elliott, a pair of likeminded electronic music fiends who met at Brighton uni in '79. After staring a fanzine and a tape label the pair eventually began to record their own material (initially under the moniker MFH) and released several cassette albums …
There's no shortage of electronic reissue imprints operating these days, especially ones concentrating on 'lost' synth-wave recordings from the late 70's - mid 80's - but few have access to the kind of material amassed over the years by Forced Nostalgia, a brand new label curated by one of Belgium's most knowledgeable and methodical sound archivists: Fré De Vos. The breadth and quality of the material already scheduled for release by Forced Nostalgia is just jaw-dropping - extending the r…
The silhouetted, impressionistic black metal ambience of William Fowler Collins has cast a long shadow over all who've crossed his path. Returning to Type Records for his 2nd LP, two years since 'Perdition Hill Radio' and not long since recording with Gog and Isis' Aaron Turner, William still exists in a permanent nighttime state, as though the sun has completely abandoned the New Mexico desert and left him, and his music, to slowly decay in the darkness, suffering the attrition of sandst…
*Strictly limited pressing - just 440 copies available* Pat Maher has left an indelible mark on our listening habits over the last few years - and in the process has become a producer tipped by many a tastemaker. From the ketamine techno fractals of his Diamond Catalog alias to the cough syrup-laced chopped and screwed productions as DJ Yo Yo Dieting, the guy just seems to have furrowed his own unique path situating him somewhere between the films of David Lynch, the aesthetic of the Tri Angle l…
Almost 40 minutes of incredible, original, completely unsocialised brilliance sounding somewhere between Vangelis, Armando and John Carpenter** The third volume of four in this incredible series, beamed direct from the depths of Berlin onto vinyl. Our maverick protagonist again looks to the future mindful of the past, following a twisted trajectory from imagination to realisation which would leave lesser artists and musicians exhausted (or in need of drying out). But as we all know, his …
Chubby Wolf was the title used by the late Dani Baquet-Long of Celer for her most glacially refined recordings. Her work is now carefully and lovingly curated by her husband and partner in Celer, Will Long, who has picked one of her most accessible albums 'Turkey Decoy' for this posthumous release on Digitalis. The phosphorescent cybernetic ambience of opener 'Cantankerous Baby' sets an understated tone which continues through the album, across the glassy pond-like reflections of 'Birthday…
Fennesz's first solo release since Black Sea (2008) is a 4 track 10 vinyl, with a CD version soon available. Using acoustic and electric guitars, bass, synths, computers, Fennesz continues to engage and entrance us in equal measure.'Liminal', 'July', 'Shift', 'Seven Stars' (with Steven Hess on drums).Fennesz writes: Seven Stars was recorded in Vienna in January 2011. I recorded and mixed the album within 3 weeks. Liminal and July were existing pieces which I have reworked. (I wrote an early ve…
Jaws is a performance oriented sound from Los Angeles, California. It employs slithering electronics, confessional narrative, and impromptu stratagems in an effort to brim the optics, confuse the mind and engage the body. Beginning as an exercise in speed and personality, Jaws has crossed the landscape multiple times, acquiring and discarding forms, tactics and participants with equal aplomb. Stress Test is the overheated, heaving combination of high-ratchet club dynamics, materially co…
Ohio-based noise upsetter Mike Shiflet has amassed an enviable amount of releases in the last decade. Tapes, vinyl, cdrs – you name it, he’s done it, but it’s taken until now for Shiflet to weld together what he regards as his defining work. The first in a series of two ‘proper’ albums, ‘Sufferers’ takes the listener to the very heart of Shiflet’s sound – through the abrasive noise heard on his early releases all the way to the shimmering ambience that made up his breakthrough album ‘Lla…
