Compilation of two scarcely-heard tapes self-published during the late 1980s / 90s by late Pennsylvania-based mail artist Mark Moreland. Hermetic cut-ups of private audio letters, radio frequency band shifting, and crude environmental sound assemblages. Gen Ken: "How to write about Mark is tough. I agree he didn't think of himself as an artist and rarely made anything like traditional art in his later years. He had some paintings he made for himself in his room and I am fortunate that he gave me…
2024 stock. Veteran musicians from the ‘post-1968’ movement, still in activity, and their relatively young ‘heirs’ are gathered here for thirteen exclusive collaborations. Showing that continuity exists despite the changes of period and generation, and that passing the baton is possible and necessary. With Daevid Allen, Gilbert Artman, Pierre Bastien, Jac Berrocal, Philippe Bolliet, Guigou Chenevier, Pascal Comelade, eRikm, David Fenech, Lionel Fondeville, Dominique Grimaud, Etienne Jaumet, Kawa…
2024 Stock, few available. This Heat's influence, or, connections with the French underground seems to be somewhat larger than expected, as here we find The Heats erstwhile drummer and singer, Mr Charles Hayward, hooking up with another couple of other drummer boys, ....namely French 'rock in opposition' bloke Guigou Chenevier, and some geezer called Rick Brown.....yes THEE Rick Brown.......nah! I haven't heard of him either! But Rick probably hasn't heard of us too, so we're quits!?Three Drumme…
This limited-edition 7” EP follows the release of Aksak Maboul's acclaimed new double LP 'Figures' (out May 22, 2020), which is the legendary experimental pop band’s first real new album in decades. These four tracks are reworks, which don’t appear as such on the album. They expand on the imaginative world of the 'Figures' album, with its unique instrumentation, its sound collages and diverse, enigmatic moods. Tout a une fin (short version) A tight 3-minute track including a song part (in which …

Congaree Nomads takes as its basis 24 three-minute recordings Greg Stuart and I made in the park, along Cedar Creek and the Kingsnake, the Weston Lake and the River trails. It is a “nomadic” series that moves very gradually from the Creek to the Congaree River. Instrumental “fogs” (harmonies made by Pisaro and Stuart) overlay the field recordings.
Michael Pisaro and Greg Stuart's Kingsnake Grey is a field recording of sundown in the Congaree National Park in South Carolina. The beautiful and erratic sonic transformation that occurred over the 72 minutes was the model for the other two pieces. (GW 011)
Listening to Thomas E. Frank’s debut solo album for the first time, I’m amazed at how recognizable and familiar it sounds. Not in the heard-it-a-thousand-times-before kind of way, but more in how direct and self-evident every single one of the 12 tracks is. Genuinely timeless stuff with songs that should have been written some 40 years ago but weren’t. It’s hard to avoid mention the mothership Den Stora Vilan, the band that Frank is more known from, but while there may be sonic similarities this…

Syed Kamran Ali (Hunter Gracchus, Harappian Night Recordings) introduces ‘Dog Wearing Dracula Fangs’; the first album from his newly minted Fish el Fish project. As if to kick the existing ideas of his Harappian Night Recordings work into all new orbits of singularity, ‘Dog Wearing Dracula Fangs’ wrenches a dense throng of voices, electronics and busted instrumentation thrashing and wailing through filters of avant-psychedelic glimmer, mock exotica and atrophied, fusion-esque sheen. A dry, myste…
Nathan Ivanco’s Shadow Pattern, based in Hamilton, Ontario, is a project for whom the term ‘under-the-radar’ is a cute understatement. Operating with scant regard for the cultivation of listenership or exposure, Ivanco’s work - both as Shadow Pattern and through his Hamilton Tapes label - usually manifests via subterraneously low-key tape editions that rarely if ever make out of his home country of Canada. Typically these releases are procured by direct contact with Ivanco himself and forgo the …
*2024 stock* Three Things is a new full-length album of pieces conceived, performed and recorded by long-term collaborators Luciano Maggiore and Louie Rice. The pair are known for multi-pronged activities as artists and organisers which have quietly but surely informed the shape of the United Kingdom's experimental audio underground for many years. Under the guise of Nopaon, they developed a series of events and performances in which they realised scores by Alvin Lucier, Robert Bozzi, Ken Friedm…
*2024 stock* Yannick Dauby returns to Discrepant for Vol2 of his ongoing study of the sounds and sights on the Penghu Archipelago, Taiwan. Penghu Experimental Sound Studio Vol2 uses interviews, field recordings, found objects and subtle electronic manipulation to transpose Yannick's impressions of the island's natural beauty. All sounds, field recordings and improvisations on electronic instruments, are from Penghu, Taiwan. Interviews of children extracted from the film "Childhood of an Archipel…
Recorded at the Grote Kerk in Den Bosch as part of John Zorn’s 70th birthday celebration at November Music in Den Bosch, this exciting performance pays tribute to one of Zorn’s seminal influences—the 15th century painter Hieronymus Bosch. Performing on two different organs simultaneously, running from one to the other, this is one of the most bizarre installments in the entire Hermetic Organ series. The CD begins with a rare private performance of Zorn alone in the church exploring and stretchin…
"Step into the enigmatic realm of ‘Funeste Human Nature’, an audacious collaboration between avant-garde luminaries Jac Berrocal, Pascal Comelade, and Vincent Epplay. In this mesmerizing sonic odyssey, the boundaries of experimental music are shattered as Berrocal's haunting trumpet, Comelade's whimsical piano, and Epplay's immersive soundscapes converge to create a kaleidoscope of textures and emotions. A journey through the depths of the human psyche, where surrealism meets primal instincts an…
Budapest’s Alley Catss wants m Helux to serve as both a new station in their work and an homage to the new age-influenced and sample-heavy synthesis of previous albums (such as 2020’s "compassion & paralysis", 2016’s ℶ, or 2021’s "exophage"), and it already feels like a genre unto itself: Absurd Ambient. Inspired by the emptiness and silliness of theatrical sets left empty, devoid of action, still and incomplete, m Helux is an awkward place of bleak humour; poured over and yet frozen.

*200 copies limited edition* [limen memoriae] is a sonic journey through the depths of memory and liminal abandonment. Drawing inspiration from the transient and fallible nature of memory, the music presented in this album tells stories of vast spaces and impossible, almost alien architectures, embracing the disoriented acceptance of memory's impermanence in contrast to eternity. The accompanying imagery depicts a world, a future yet unknown but long forgotten; an uninhabited landscape of struct…

For decade, this collaboration was supposed to happen with Dapnom. Now, we enter a new dimension with my own piano ! We worked on this piece of crazy art last year, when the planet started to get wronger and wronger. This album is an ode to our ruin ! Even the most experienced ear will not come out of PiaNoise unscathed. Consecrating the meeting of two consummate artists, this release confronts their universe like a massive head-on shock in the eye of a sound storm by which we sometimes feel tot…
Guitarist Lee Underwood’s syncretic blend of jazz, folk, and blues was a tremendous force behind Tim Buckley’s genre-stretching late 60s/early 70s music – but his 1988 acoustic guitar opus California Sigh has remained a unsung footnote to his story. Until now! This first time vinyl-edition reveals Lee’s free-floating acoustic moods, with synths and co-production from ambient avatar Steve Roach, as a soulful work of tranquility and transcendence.
