Henry Dixon Cowell

Henry Dixon Cowell (1897-1965) was born in Menlo Park, California, and died in Woodstock, New York. Largely self-taught, he studied composition with Charles Seeger at Berkeley. He worked with tone clusters, the string piano and graphic notation, and wrote New Musical Resources (1930). He founded the New Music Society in 1925 and New Music Quarterly in 1927, which published scores by Ives, Copland and Schoenberg. His techniques influenced John Cage and Lou Harrison. Mode has issued Dancing With Henry, devoted to new discoveries in his music, and Works for Saxophone.
