John Heward Quintet

John Heward (Montreal, 1934-2018) was a painter and sculptor and a free-jazz percussionist, self-taught in both fields. He took a B.A. at Bishop's University, worked in book publishing in London, and began painting in 1965. He had more than 40 solo exhibitions and won the Paul-Émile Borduas Award in 2012. The quintet, recorded live in Montreal in September 2014 and issued on Mode/Avant, has Lori Freedman (clarinets), Joe McPhee (saxophones), Barre Phillips (bass), Dana Reason (piano) and Heward on drums.
