Jürg Frey, born in Aarau, Switzerland, in 1953, is a composer and clarinettist and one of the central figures of the Wandelweiser group, the collective of composer-performers he joined in 1993. His music is quiet and very slow, built from single sounds, silences and small repeated figures, and can last an hour without ever raising its voice; the long piano and string pieces of recent years have made him one of the most recorded composers of that school. He studied clarinet in Zurich and Geneva, graduating with a concert diploma under Thomas Friedli, co-founded the Lenzburg Music Forum and directed the Aarau series Moments Musicaux for over ten years.
