2012 release ** "Woody Jackson has collaborated on soundtracks ("The Devil Wears Prada," "Youth in Revolt," "American History X") and on the works of artists like Badly Drawn Boy and Daniel Johnston. Devoted to Morricone-inspired influences, he threw himself into this new soundtrack, perfectly adhering to its canons. "Dos Manos" is an almost entirely instrumental album, slow, warm, and enveloping, and, inevitably, a bit lacking when deprived of its visual counterpart. This is common when soundtracks forgo song form and epic tones and instead serve primarily as accompaniment to the events and atmosphere of the film. Despite these limitations, the album is a pleasant Calexico-style diversion among the now-dry rivers of increasingly parsimonious summer releases. It's the ideal accompaniment for a road trip in the height of summer, when the sun bakes the asphalt and the coveted seaside destination still seems a mirage."
