Dischi Fantom presents Soundwalk Collective’s soundtrack to Sasha Waltz’s new choreography, Kreatur, premiered in June 2017 at Radialsystem V in Berlin and touring in Germany, Belgium, France and Spain in 2018.
Inhabiting the liminal spaces between different art forms is a central element in Sasha Waltz’s choreographies. In this new piece – carried out in collaboration with the fashion designer Iris van Herpen, the lighting designer Urs Schönebaum and Soundwalk Collective – the choreographer and her dancers investigate aspects of our existence set against the contemporary backdrop of a society divided by power and powerlessness, dominance and weakness, freedom and control, community and isolation.
The 500 copies of Kreatur contain a 180 gr. LP and a 4-page booklet with a conversation between Soundwalk Collective’s Stephan Crasneanscki and Sasha Waltz.
The compositions are based on field recordings collected at the Alcantara factory in Nera Montoro (Italy), clubs Arma17 (Moscow) and Berghain (Berlin), and Gedenkstätte Berlin-Hohenschönhausen (the former Stasi prison in Berlin). The result is a musical abstraction of the resonance of these 20th-century buildings – with industrial machinery, factory acoustics, and echoes of their empty architectures.
“Each of these buildings is made of multiple layers of history, sleeping layers, each one with their own narrative. Through the act of recording and re-composing, we have re-awoken these narratives and memories that were left behind by their inhabitants, and held within the walls of these buildings.”
An international genre-bending group of artists-musicians, Soundwalk Collective (Stephan Crasneanscki, Simone Merli, and Kamran Sadeghi) bound in Manhattan to produce records, sound installations, and live performances. Often in collaboration with other artists, musicians, and writers.
