Monitor, the 1981 solo album by Gianni Leone (Leonero), stands at the crossroads of Italian New Wave and progressive rock, offering a singular listening experience that both anticipates and transcends its era. Conceived in California following Leone’s transformative years with Balletto di Bronzo and his ventures in New York, this release embodies a synthesis of transatlantic influences and personal artistic exploration.

Working with the Optical Band—featuring Californian musicians such as Steve Hufsteter and Charlie Quintana—the album’s first side surges with crisp, instrumentally inventive tracks, blending rhythmic immediacy and synth-hued rock, while echoing the aesthetics of early post-punk and new wave groups like XTC and Devo. The inclusion of Strada, a kinetic piece previously released as a single, and Piangi con me, a reinterpretation of a Rokes hit, anchors this phase with Italian lyricism and a razor-sharp, Screamers-influenced energy.

On the flip side, Leone turns inward, drawing upon his expertise as a keyboard virtuoso. Assisted only by rhythm machines, these solo compositions range from the hypnotic—such as Volpe robot—to the somber and ethereal, achieving a rare blend of raw, mechanical modernism with nuanced emotional textures. Monitor navigates between two musical worlds: one brash, communal, and outward-thinking; the other introspective and meticulously crafted, highlighting Leone’s mastery in creating atmospheric soundscapes.

The record’s overarching production, distinctive for its era, imbues each track with a haunting clarity, cementing Monitor as a cult artifact in Italian underground music. Leone’s attempt at merging Mediterranean roots with the urban pulse of emerging electronic rock is palpable, forging a style that resists easy categorization yet remains instantly recognizable. This duality creates a listening experience that is both challenging and rewarding, reflective of a period where boundaries between genres were actively being renegotiated.

With the current reissue, Monitor is accessible for a new audience, urging contemporary listeners and longtime devotees alike to engage with its forward-thinking spirit and unfiltered experimentation. As Italian New Wave continues to garner interest, Monitor stands as a testament to Leone’s dedication to reinvention, clarity of vision, and refusal to settle into stylistic complacency. The album’s influence quietly echoes in the work of later musicians, underscoring its importance as a bridge between tradition and innovation in Italian music.
