*220 copies limited edition* Lucien's music is inspired by Caribbean rhythms (biguines, mazurka, zouk), Caribbean rhythms (calypso), and Latin American rhythms (bossa nova, salsa), and is strongly influenced by modal jazz, jazz-fusion, and American funk. Laura Laura, Mim, Herbie — titles that showcase the musicians' creativity and the harmonic elegance of the compositions, making jazz both accessible and sophisticated.
Lucien Joly’s talent is evident not only in his compositions but also in his ability to engage every musician he collaborates with in a shared creative process. He encourages them to contribute to the harmonies and arrangements and provides ample room for improvisation. Their playing styles differ, as do their approaches to improvisation, but Lucien’s clear vision is always present, unifying everyone’s talents and revealing a cohesive musical universe of breathtaking consistency across seven albums. The story started when the DJ & Producer Mambo Chick decided to meet him, with the goal of reissuing his two well-known & hard-to-find albums, originally released on vinyl in 1986 and 1987. After she exposed the project with passion, Lucien first laughed before humbly claryfying that he had produced 7 albums rather than 2, mainly in self-production!! Revealing 30 years of music making & recording, plans had to be changed !
This "selected works" gather 7 tracks: each one originates from one of Lucien’s 7 albums, as a "tribute" to honor Lucien's career and creativity. It is an immersive introduction into the prolific work of this underated saxophonist in order to honor his career, his talent, and to celebrate his place in the history of Caribbean music.
