Art Pepper came back in the late seventies playing harder and rawer than he had in the fifties, having absorbed Coltrane and decided to stop being the elegant West Coast altoist everyone remembered. So In Love is from that stretch, recorded for John Snyder's audiophile-minded Artists House, and Pepper plays standards with an emotional directness that borders on uncomfortable. Beautiful tone, no polish, and a sense that every phrase is being paid for.
