Rekem presents the first physical release by I broke the vase, a project formed by Eva Matsigkou and Nefeli Sani in 2018. The two create musical performances through listening, free improvisation and composition. Central to their practice is the writing and reading of autoethnographic texts, the participation of the body, as well as interactions with space and environment. Most of their work appears in the form of one-off projects, in a constant state of flux that allows them to remain sensitive and open, both musically and conceptually.
Originally conceived upon their move to Athens during the COVID-19 pandemic, this project was first presented as a live streaming performance from Pheno, in Thessaloniki. Its nine songs recount minor moments of everyday life: marvelling at the walls of a new flat, looking for love by the stalls of a farmer’s market, finding yourself in odd corners of an exciting yet tough city – the songs move constantly and nimbly from moment to moment and feeling to feeling. Displaying their penchant for both melodic and episodic narration, the tracks form a similarly intricate musical patchwork that moves effortlessly and with a feather-light touch. Its diaristic form makes it a spirited listen, while its poignancy allows us a fresh outlook on the everyday.
