"The Polydor Years" is a comprehensive triple-CD box set released in 2019 by Floating World Records, chronicling the formative and most influential period of the Pink Fairies, one of the UK’s cult underground rock bands of the early 1970s. This collection brings together the band's first three albums originally released on Polydor Records: "Never Never Land" (1971), "What A Bunch Of Sweeties" (1972), and "Kings of Oblivion" (1973), showcasing the group’s evolution from psychedelic rock to proto-punk and hard-edged blues

Formed from the ashes of The Deviants, with key members Paul Rudolph, Duncan Sanderson, and Russell Hunter, and later joined by Twink and Larry Wallis, the Pink Fairies became known for their anarchic spirit, experimental jams, and close ties to the Ladbroke Grove scene. Their music reflects a wild blend of psychedelic improvisation, proto-punk energy, and riff-driven hard rock, drawing comparisons to contemporaries like MC5 and influencing later acts from punk to stoner rock

The first disc, "Never Never Land," captures the band’s search for identity, mixing proto-punk tracks like "Do It" and "Teenage Rebel" with psychedelic explorations such as "Uncle Harry’s Last Freak Out." The second album, "What A Bunch Of Sweeties," sees the group consolidating a heavier, riff-based sound with standout tracks like "Right On, Fight On" and "Portobello Shuffle," moving closer to hard rock and blues while retaining their signature sense of humor and unpredictability. By the third album, "Kings of Oblivion," with Larry Wallis on guitar, the band had sharpened their sound into a more urgent, punk-infused direction, exemplified by tracks like "City Kids" and the frenetic "I Wish I Was A Girl"

"The Polydor Years" not only highlights the band’s musical versatility and raw energy but also underscores their lasting influence on the development of punk, metal, and alternative rock. This set is essential listening for anyone interested in the roots of British underground music and the cross-pollination of genres that defined the era
