“The Disintegration Loops was, and is, an amazingly nuanced work.”

Has anyone ever heard The Disintegration Loops end? We’re not being flippant; we’re entirely serious. Indie label Temporary Residence has released a new “Arcadia Archive Edition” of ambient auteur William Basinski’s marquee work. And it’s hard to imagine what happens when a listener hears the five-hour-long suite crawl to an end on the B side of the set’s eighth and final LP. Does it simply return to where it started? What role does memory play, the record’s melancholy mini-symphonies increasingly etched into muscle memory? Is the listener left alone to construct (or reconstruct) the record’s meaning? When the label 2062 initially released Basinski’s work in 2002 and 2003, the compositions spanned four distinct LPs, with each found-sound-assisted recording played on a seemingly infinite loop.
