Amirtha Kidambi
Amirtha Kidambi is a New York vocalist, composer and improviser of South Indian heritage who grew up in California. Her music joins free jazz, noise and electronics with the Hindu devotional songs and Carnatic singing she knew from childhood, and she often accompanies herself on harmonium. She leads Elder Ones, a band whose recent work deals openly with political and social struggle. Kidambi trained as a Western classical singer and took a master's degree at Brooklyn College. As a 2016-2017 Asian Cultural Council fellow she studied Carnatic voice in India.
