Ayumi Ishito

Ayumi Ishito is a Japanese-born tenor saxophonist and composer based in Brooklyn, part of the New York improvised and avant-garde jazz scene since she moved to the city in 2010. She took up the saxophone at 19 while at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto and then studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston. She often runs her horn through effects and is known for her many records on 577 Records, several with Daniel Carter. Ishito has led her own quintet since 2011, with albums such as View From A Little Cave, Midnite Cinema (2019) and Wondercult Club (577, 2024).
