Devo is an American band formed in Akron, Ohio, in 1973, with roots among art students at Kent State University. Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh built the group around the idea of "de-evolution", the notion that humanity was regressing into conformity and herd behaviour. The band is usually filed under new wave, and its 1980 single "Whip It" was its only top 40 hit in the United States. Devo released its debut Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! on Warner Bros. in 1978, with Brian Eno as producer.
