Elliott Carter

Elliott Carter (1908-2012) was born in New York and lived to 103. He studied at Harvard, then in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, and earlier with Walter Piston and Gustav Holst. He is known for metric modulation and for layered, independent rhythmic strands. He won the Pulitzer Prize twice, for String Quartet No. 2 (1960) and String Quartet No. 3 (1973), as well as the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize (1981) and the National Medal of Arts (1985). Other works include Variations for Orchestra, the Piano Concerto and Symphonia. His only opera is What Next?.
