Ernstalbrecht Stiebler

Ernstalbrecht Stiebler (1934-2024) was a German composer born in Berlin. He studied in Hamburg and at the Darmstadt summer courses, where he took lessons with Stockhausen and first heard the music of La Monte Young. His reductive music, built on sustained sounds, slow repetition and gradually shifting forms, draws on visual art more than on mainstream minimalism, and as a radio producer he championed Feldman, Cage, Lucier and Scelsi. Stiebler headed new music at Hessischer Rundfunk from 1969 to 1995 and founded its Forum Neue Musik series in 1989, co-producing many CDs with Hat Hut.
