He works between avant-garde jazz and composed chamber music, writing for small ensembles that mix improvisation with ideas from twentieth-century concert music. He is known for his Pipetet and for a long series of albums on the hat ART label. Koglmann founded the label Pipe Records in 1973, issuing records by Steve Lacy and Bill Dixon as well as his own Opium for Franz. He later formed the Pipetet, which debuted with Schlaf Schlemmer, Schlaf Magritte (hat ART, 1984).
