Jean-Marc Foussat

An EMS AKS synthesizer, the briefcase model from 1972, is Jean-Marc Foussat's whole instrument, and he plays it as an improviser, in real time and without presets. Born in Oran, Algeria, in 1955, he started on guitar in French experimental prog bands of the mid 1970s, then abandoned it for tape collage and studio work in the concrete tradition. Meeting Evan Parker and Paul Lovens at the start of the 1980s settled the matter: from then on, only improvised music. As a sound recordist he captured hundreds of concerts for Incus and other labels, and in 1996 he co-founded Potlatch with Jacques Oger.
