Joël-François Durand

Joël-François Durand (born 1954 in Orléans) is a French composer. He studied mathematics, music education and piano in Paris, then composition with Brian Ferneyhough in Freiburg (1981-84) and at Stony Brook University (1984-86), and attended masterclasses with György Ligeti, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono. In 1983 he won a prize at the Third International Stockhausen Composition Competition in Brescia. His works include a Piano Concerto (1993), a String Quartet (2005) and Le Tombeau de Rameau (2008). He teaches at the University of Washington and founded Durand Tonearms, which makes tonearms for record players, in 2009.
