Joel Futterman

Joel Futterman (born 1946 in Chicago) is an American jazz pianist who also plays soprano saxophone and Indian wooden flute. He played in the Chicago scene of the 1960s and moved to Virginia in 1972. He developed a way of playing in which the two hands move fully independently, and has made a long run of improvised recordings on independent labels. Futterman studied and played with Clarence "Gene" Shaw as a young man. His first album was Cafeteria, and in the 1980s he produced his own records with Jimmy Lyons and Richard Davis.
