John Heward (1934-2018) was a Montreal-born drummer and visual artist, self-taught in both fields. After a degree at Bishop's University and work in book publishing in London, he returned to Montreal and began painting in 1965. He had more than forty solo exhibitions, working mainly in painting and sculpture. As a percussionist he devoted himself to free improvisation and played with Joe McPhee, Lori Freedman, Barre Phillips and Dana Reason. He died in November 2018. Mode/Avant issued Voices: Ten Improvisations with McPhee, the duo On No On with Freedman, and the quintet album Live in Montreal.
