Jooklo Duo is an Italian free jazz duo formed in 2004 by saxophonist Virginia Genta and drummer and percussionist David Vanzan. The pair play raw, loud improvised music rooted in the free jazz of the 1960s, and they have become known through constant touring and many small-run records, often extended into larger Jooklo groups with guests. Virginia Genta and David Vanzan first played together around 2003 in a noise-rock band, Zurich against Zurich. Besides tenor saxophone, Genta plays flutes and melodica, and Vanzan also plays mallets and flute. They run their own label, Troglosound.
At the beginning of 2024 I found myself on a trip up to North-West with my fellows Virginia and David (of Jooklo fame) in their legendary green Scudo van. I was ready for whatever adventure and trying to up-lift my friends from an uncomfortable situation they had at that time in a small town of the Ruhrgebiet named Moers, where they were temporarily based. The mood of the road that week was of rebellion, feeling of fixing injustice, and consequently the strenghtening of belief in underground bro…

" Here we have the tasty combination of two blog favorites, finding China-native Lao Dan joining forces with the visiting Jooklo Duo for a set of cosmic vibrations (and a little bit of free funk) at Old Heaven Books during 2018's LOFT Festival. Here Vanzan takes up his usual percussion duties while Lao Dan and Genta load up on various reeds and flutes which Genta supplements with a generous sidecar of vintage keyboard. This rowdy little number has a little bit of everything and once the trio get…
Sinergia Elettronica, the conjunction between Jooklo and Metabolismus orbiting around the museum of weirdness of Degenfeld (Germany), had always been characterized by instant and unpredictable music, therefore their releases being put out as flashes of the moment, as sparkling and quick. Not the case of this one, the first recording appearing on vinyl, which has been sitting under an old piano for a few years before actually seeing the light of day. Three long pieces of prog-delic angular abstra…
"Not since Albert Ayler stalked the hamnar of Stockholm and reverberated his fire music off the walls of LES tenements has there been an avant-garde jazz saxophonist who can all out wail like Virginia Genta can. Don’t let her calm presence fool you. Nor should David Vanzan’s taller stature lead to believe this is not an equal opportunity free jazz freak-out. From when their poles first were converged by the Cosmic Force in 1999, Italy’s (with Finnish godparents) Jooklo Duo has been winning he…
