Keeril Makan is an American composer who grew up in New Jersey and trained first as a violinist. He studied composition and religion at Oberlin, took a PhD at UC Berkeley, and spent time in Helsinki on a Fulbright grant and in Paris. He is professor of music composition at MIT, where he is also vice provost for the arts. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Luciano Berio Rome Prize. His works include the opera Persona, after Bergman, with a libretto by Jay Scheib. His CDs are In Sound (Tzadik), Target (Starkland) and Afterglow (Mode).
