Luigi Dallapiccola
Luigi Dallapiccola (1904-1975) was born in Pisino d'Istria and died in Florence. He studied at the Florence Conservatory, where he later taught (1931-1967), and his students included Luciano Berio. He was the first Italian composer to adopt twelve-tone technique systematically, keeping a lyrical, melodic character. His works include Canti di prigionia (1938-41), the opera Il prigioniero (1944-48) and the opera Ulisse (1960-68). His opposition to Mussolini's regime and its racial laws marked his protest works.
