Lula Cortes
Lula Côrtes (Luiz Augusto Martins Côrtes, died 2011) was a Brazilian singer, composer, poet and painter from Recife, Pernambuco. He was one of the first musicians in the Brazilian Northeast to combine regional rhythms with rock. He is best known for Paêbirú (1975), the album he made with Zé Ramalho. Lula Côrtes released his first album, Satwa, in 1973 with the guitarist Lailson de Holanda. Paêbirú drew on the Pedra do Ingá in Paraíba. Nearly all copies and the master tape were lost in the 1975 flood in Recife, and the album was reissued by Shadoks in 2005 and by Mr Bongo in 2008.
