Muriel Grossmann

Muriel Grossmann is an Austrian saxophonist and composer, born in Paris and raised in Vienna, who has lived on Ibiza since 2004. She studied classical flute from the age of five before taking up the saxophone, and she plays alto, soprano and tenor. Her own groups play spiritual jazz that draws on the music of John and Alice Coltrane and of Pharoah Sanders. Grossmann played with R&B, funk, world music and jazz bands before moving to Barcelona in the early 2000s to lead her own groups.

First Meditations on John Coltrane
LP version. This album is a tribute to the person and spirit of John Coltrane. It was produced by musicians who not only admire Coltrane but embody similar values. While it’s always a good time to honor Coltrane’s memory, this particular moment seems to carry an increased urgency of remembering his message and mission.Since some owners of this amazing record may be unfamiliar with Coltrane’s character, it’s worthwhile to briefly state a few biographical details.First, Coltrane was a compassionate…
MG and The Echoes of Swing
The world knows Muriel Grossmann as a bandleader, saxophonist, and composer of highly individual and original music. Her work has become closely associated with a modern revival of spiritual jazz, reflected in albums such as Golden Rule, Universal Code, and Quiet Earth, and in performances across Europe with herlong-standing quartet. That is one side of the story. In Ibiza, where Grossmann has lived and worked for over two decades, another side of the artist reveals itself. Locals know her not o…

Quartet
"Composition and its performance can have an organic relationship, a balance between written and the improvised. Muriel Grossmann’s wide compositional and performing talents are clearly reflected in four-voice pieces such as Diversity and Quintessence, suite-like compositions such as Flügel and Echo, as well as brisk, energetic works like Andrew. The quartet composed of Radomir Milojkovic on guitar, David Marroquin on upright bass, and Marko Jelaca on drums, has become a sound lab — a group wher…
Muriel Grossmann Plays The Music Of McCoy Tyner And Grateful Dead
At first glance, the idea that McCoy Tyner and the Grateful Dead might share musical DNA seems like a stretch. One built frameworks to support Coltrane’s spiritual flights—rewriting the jazz harmony playbook while turning chords into flexible architecture. The others were a San Francisco circus of psychedelic chaos and Americana grooves, an improvising rock band whose mythology often overshadowed their musicianship. On the surface, Tyner and the Dead appear to come from different galaxies. But l…
