Nihilist Spasm Band

Nihilist Spasm Band was formed in 1965 by a group of people who enjoyed music and wanted to play in a band. There was no desire to learn to play traditional instruments so kazoos were bought and assorted noise makers modified or built from scratch. The band started playing regularly every Monday night in 1966 and has just carried on .The personal has stayed the same. John Boyle (artist) kazoo and drums, John Clement (MD) guitar and drums, Bill Exley (geezer/latinist) vocals, Murray Favro (artist) guitar, Hugh McIntyre (curmudgeon/polymath) bass and Art Pratten (pensioner/gentleman of leisure) Pratt-a-various and Waterpipe

Concert Villa Arson Nice
**300 copies limited edition** "When the Nihilist Spasm Band's first album was released in 1968, no other band in the world recorded such a racket. For these Canadians, who had been practicing for three years in their London (Ontario) rehearsal room, the motto seemed to be to indulge in spontaneous sound creation, thus justifying the abolition of all limits in the de'bride's performances they organized every Monday night. Enjoying noise without hindrance turned out to be their only creed. The re…

* 2021 Stock * "In 1965, eight guys from London, Ontario, decided to start a free-improv group — 'free' to the point of building their own instruments, which they decided couldn't be set up to produce specific pitches... Their vocalist, schoolteacher Bill Exley, banged on a cooking pot and bellowed hilariously about stupidity and destruction and Canada. They didn't treat what they were doing as an advanced, visionary form of experimental music, but as a big, stupid, fun, ecstatic noise. By the '…

No Nihilist Spasm Band In Mulhouse
The nihilist spasm Band began in the summer of 1965 in London, Ontario as an informal kazoo band of friends making a soundtrack for a film by the late artist Greg Curnoe. We soon built new, louder electric instruments. We played noise music because we did not know how to play real music. In 1969 we toured Europe for the first time, playing at the Paris Biennale des Jeunes and at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, England. It was not until 2004 that we toured Europe again, playing at V…
Breaking Wind
Nihilist Spasm Band have been around for much longer than forty years, playing together on a weekly basis since 1966 in their home town of London, Ontario, Canada and continue to do so until this very day. A band of non musicians playing entirely free music, although perhaps after all these years they may have picked up some tricks. There have not been a lot of releases by them over these years, so I can imagine that Malevitsis is proud to be instrumental in adding to that small catalogue. It's …

1984
When the cassette 1984 was released on Chimik Communications in 1984, the Nihilist Spasm Band's last record was the 1978 Vol. 2. Although the band was very active at the time, playing every Monday night at Forest City Gallery in London, Ontario, since the mid-'70s, it very seldom recorded. 1984 was an attempt at documenting these weekly sessions. Tracks were edited from domestic recording tapes, therefore the sound quality is poor, bootleg-like at times (like on "Are You OK Bill? July 30 1984").…
No borders
Right when the Nihilist Spasm Band was beginning to repeat itself, transforming into a caricature, the group released no borders, a fresh, stunning two-CD set with guest Joe McPhee. Disc one was recorded live on October 27, 2000; disc two culls studio recordings from the day before and after. Only four of the 18 tracks feature all seven musicians playing at the same time. On the other ones, subgroups explore exciting new directions. Vocalist Bill Exley and McPhee's "Duet" is a disquieting drone …
