Raison d'être
Raison d'être is the project of the Swedish sound artist Peter Andersson, formed in 1991 and for many years the flagship of the Cold Meat Industry label. Its records, from Prospectus I (1993) through Within the Depths of Silence and Phormations, In Sadness, Silence and Solitude and The Empty Hollow Unfolds, defined dark ambient: overwhelming industrial landscapes of beauty and sorrow, with Gregorian chant, bells and metallic drones echoing through cathedral spaces. Andersson also records as Stratvm Terror, Necrophorus and Atomine Elektrine, each name a different shade of the same sensibility, and since the label's demise his catalogue has been reissued and continued through Cyclic Law and his own Yantra Atmospheres.
