Sarah Hennies, born in Louisville in 1979, is an American percussionist and composer whose work centres on an immersive, psychoacoustic presentation of sound, often reached through a gruelling, endurance-based performance practice. Long, repetitive playing on vibraphone, snare or found metal draws out the difference tones and overtones that live between the notes, and asks the audience to listen differently. Her pieces also engage directly with queer and transgender experience, memory and the body: Contralto (2017), for trans women's voices, string quartet and percussion, is her best known work.
