Notes on Other Music is a 112 page A5 perfect bound book published on the occasion of the Fourth Edition Festival for Other Music in Stockholm. The book collects photographs, essays, interviews and conversations relating to the festival programme since its inception in 2016.
The book features an extended piece on Eliane Radigue by Kate Molleson who visited the composer at her Paris apartment to discuss her instrumental music ahead of the Swedish premiere of Occam Ocean — her work for orchestra performed by ONCEIM — at the Second Edition Festival in 2017. There is also a revealing and comprehensive essay by Louise Gray on the ‘structural intimacy’ of Annea Lockwood’s enduring work (a small selection of which was presented at the Fourth Edition Festival). Robin Mackay makes a first time translation into English of Francois Bayle’s foundational essay on the principles of the Acousmonium (the multi-speaker system he devised at the GRM for the performance of electronic music) with a poetic afterward by current GRM director Francois J Bonnet. We’ve also included a short essay by Sarah Hennies on Gather — the piece she performed as part of the Second Edition alongside interviews with Terre Thaemlitz and Leila Bordreuil.
The book also tries to make some small contribution to the oral history of creative practice with four conversations. Two of Sweden’s great contemporary artists: Christine Odlund and Leif Elggren (on smoking of all things); Cara Tolmie and Stine Janvin on what it means to be a woman who sings; Nicole Mitchell and Fumi Okiji on the socio-political dimensions of collective music making; and Seymour Wright and Jean Luc Guionnet on the saxophone as machine (and much more besides).
Photographs by Dawid Laskowski, Micke Keysendal, Delphine Blast, Petra Cvelbar and Laszlo Ruszka. Edited by festival founder/director John Chantler.
The Edition Festival for Other Music takes place in Stockholm each February. A special ‘SuperDeluxe Edition’ was also held in Tokyo at SuperDeluxe in November 2018. The festival has also published a recording of Ellen Fullman and Okkyung Lee’s concert at the inaugural festival in 2016 under the title ‘The Air Around Her’.
