Carl Stone

Carl Stone, born in Los Angeles in 1953, is one of the pioneers of live computer music, hailed by the Village Voice as the king of sampling and as one of the best composers living in the United States. A student of Morton Subotnick and James Tenney at CalArts, he began in the 1970s with tape and turntables and from the mid 1980s performed with a computer on stage, chopping and looping records, pop songs and field recordings into hypnotic, unexpectedly emotional pieces such as Shing Kee (1986).
