Werner Durand is a composer, instrument builder and performer based in Berlin. Since the late 1970s he has played his own music for saxophones, Iranian ney and self-made wind instruments, long tubes of plexiglass and PVC that give him pitches and colours no factory horn provides. His interests span many traditions: he studied with Ariel Kalma in Paris and La Monte Young in New York, Indian classical music in India and Berlin with Kamalesh Maitra, and Iranian ney with Ali Reza Asgharia. His personal, minimalist style is characterised by rich layers, textures and rhythmic effects achieved with digital delays, and in projects such as The 13th Tribe and his long collaboration with the dhrupad singer Amelia Cuni it meets the drone at its source.
