The Band Whose Name Is A Symbol is a psychedelic rock collective from Ottawa, Canada, started by bassist Mark McIntyre and drummer John Westhaver. The group builds long pieces out of free improvisation, close to krautrock and space rock, with Can as a declared influence. Its line-up has grown from four players to ensembles of up to nine. The Band Whose Name Is A Symbol released a small lathe-cut album to coincide with its first concert. Later records came out on Cardinal Fuzz, Feeding Tube and Birdman Sound, which issued Symbol Ensemble III in 2019.
