Yvar Mikhashoff (born Ronald Mackay, 1941-1993) was an American pianist and composer, born in Troy, New York, and died in Buffalo. He studied at the Eastman School, Juilliard and the University of Houston, took a doctorate at the University of Texas in 1972, and worked with Nadia Boulanger in France. From 1973 until his death he was professor of music at the University at Buffalo. Between 1983 and 1991 he commissioned 127 tangos for solo piano from composers around the world. He worked closely with John Cage and Morton Feldman. His Mode recordings are Panorama of American Piano Music and Virtuoso Opera Fantasies.
