A mixtape of carimbos and vinhetas, the audio drops of Brazil's paredão sound systems, recorded between the 1980s and 2025, from Rio funk crews to São Paulo mandelão and the rigs of Belém. Compiled by GG Albuquerque.

A Minha Vida é um Filme e Nele Eu Sou o Vilão is a sonic journey into the world of carimbos and vinhetas - the signature audio drops used in Brazil’s powerful street sound systems known as paredões.

While these snippets function like DJ tags commonly heard in hip-hop and electronic music scenes the world over, they have evolved into a beast of their own in Brazil. They became spaces for musical experimentation, tools for building identity and style, and a way for artists and crews to express territorial values, rivalries, humor, and pride. These sonic signatures matured alongside various regional scenes, with each locale developing its own specific slang, aesthetic, and sonic punch. The result is a vibrant mosaic reflecting the massive diversity of favela music cultures.

This mixtape brings together carimbos and vinhetas recorded between the 1980s and 2025. The selection ranges from the classic funk sound system crews of Rio de Janeiro to the hallucinogenic tuin of São Paulo’s rising mandelão scene. It also moves through the massive animal-shaped pyrotechnic sound systems of Belém, the iconic catchphrases of Salvador’s pagodão singers, and the reggae sound systems of São Luís - known as the “Brazilian Jamaica”.

Here you’ll hear DJ signatures, set intros, stage calls, and fragments that are etched into the collective memory of these street parties. Rather than following a strict timeline or map, the mix moves in a spiral, weaving together different eras, genres, and territories of paredão culture. Throughout, pop culture is constantly recycled and reimagined. A voice reminiscent of Darth Vader invites listeners to explore the dark side of funk, while a Brazilian commentator’s frantic Cristiano Ronaldo goal call collides with the energy of a Travis Scott hit.

Emerging from this same heat are the slogans and trash talk that keep these scenes alive:

“Even the future didn’t see this coming.”

“The kid is like a catastrophe, crushing the competition.”

And the line that gives this project its title:

“My life’s a movie and I’m the villain.”

Often overlooked in official music histories, women DJs also use these drops to claim agency and space, champion other women, and disrupt the male-dominated structures of the music scene.

An entire universe is packed into these few seconds of audio: neighborhood stories, crew rivalries, dreams of making it big, improvised technology, humor, and raw street-wise creativity. More than simple tags, carimbos are manifestos. They announce exactly who controls the sound and who has the power to fire up the crowd.
