The mid-fifties Verve classic, home of the most famous false ending in jazz - "one more time!" - and the full power of the New Testament Count Basie band. This is the orchestra as precision machine and party engine at once: the reeds phrasing as a single organism, the brass hitting like weather, "Corner Pocket" and "Shiny Stockings" alongside the immortal title arrangement. Basie's second great band gets less romantic mythology than the Kansas City original, but on evidence like this, it was one of the most perfect ensembles ever assembled in any genre. Japanese UMV pressing - the audiophile series, and this big-band dynamite deserves it.
