Using the crème de la crème of sound engineers and the unsurpassed production quality of Quality Record Pressings, the Acoustic Sounds series is mastered from the original tapes, pressed on 180-gram vinyl and packaged in high-quality gatefold covers produced by Stoughton Printing Co., where — as was customary on records of the era — the printed paper sheet is applied to the cardboard (so the cardboard itself is not directly inked). All this is overseen by Chad Kassem, CEO of Acoustic Sounds, the company specialized in audiophile releases.
Selected from the extraordinary Verve/UMe catalog, Recorded in January 1962 at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio, Inception marked the debut of the great pianist McCoy Tyner as a leader. The session features a perfect trio completed by bassist Art Davis and drummer Elvin Jones, all former collaborators of John Coltrane: hence the trio’s extraordinary cohesion, in which Tyner’s highly personal style (between pedal use and a sweeping sense of rhythm — well supported by Davis and Jones) emerges in full force. A statement of intent and a landmark in the discography of the great pianist.
