John Coltrane (1926 to 1967) was an American saxophonist and composer and one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century. His early recordings show him inside the relatively conventional bounds of bebop and hard bop, with Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk; his lasting legacy rests on the modal jazz of his classic quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones, from 1960 to 1964, and on the free explorations of his last years. He recorded more than fifty albums as a leader, from Giant Steps to A Love Supreme, Ascension and Meditations.
