November 1965: the classic quartet plus Pharoah Sanders and Rashied Ali - two bands colliding and transcending in the same room. "The Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost" opens with an intensity that has never been surpassed on record: two tenors screaming glory, two drummers generating weather, McCoy Tyner and Jimmy Garrison holding the earth steady underneath. And then the suite keeps going, through fury into an almost unbearable tenderness. John Coltrane called it a continuation of A Love Supreme, and it is - the same prayer, spoken in fire this time.
