On Sweet Love, Bitter, Mal Waldron turns a fictional portrait of Charlie Parker’s final years into a darkly luminous suite of cinematic jazz. His lyricism, tension and blues‑stained restraint guide a formidable 1967 ensemble through music that moves beyond soundtrack function, making New York feel bruised, nocturnal and fiercely alive.

Sweet Love, Bitter is one of Mal Waldron’s most striking statements for the screen: a soundtrack that refuses to remain background music. Written for Herbert Danska’s 1967 independent film - a fictional retelling of Charlie Parker’s final years and a vivid portrait of the New York jazz world - Waldron’s score takes the city’s nightlife, aspiration, exhaustion and private sorrow as its raw material. The film may offer the narrative frame, but the album creates its own drama: compact themes, darkly lyrical piano lines, brisk ensemble exchanges and spacious pauses that make every shift in mood feel earned.

Waldron leads an exceptional ensemble: trumpeter Dave Burns; saxophonists George Coleman and Charles Davis; bassists Richard Davis and George Duvivier; and drummer Alfred Dreares. The personnel shifts subtly across the program, but the band’s central character remains intact - richly voiced horns, rhythm sections that can swing with elegance or tighten into unease, and Waldron’s piano acting as both narrator and undertow. Burns brings a burnished, alert trumpet voice; Coleman’s alto and tenor add bite and bluesy mobility; Davis’s baritone lends depth and a low, human weight. Richard Davis appears on selected pieces, while Duvivier carries much of the remaining program with his sure-footed, resonant pulse. Dreares, meanwhile, supplies a rhythmic language that can suggest propulsion without crowding the music’s dramatic spaces.

The album’s title sets its emotional coordinates: sweetness always carries bitterness inside it. Waldron’s melodic gifts are apparent throughout, yet he refuses easy sentiment. A phrase may begin with the grace of a ballad and end in a darker harmonic shadow; a bright horn arrangement may be unsettled by the piano’s angular voicings or by the rhythm section’s uneasy emphasis. That tension is central to Waldron’s compositional language. He was known for lyricism, but also for music that could feel haunted, blues-saturated and psychologically charged. On Sweet Love, Bitter, those qualities become a screen language of their own, depicting not a romanticized jazz life but its bruises, compromises, flashes of communal joy and private isolation.

The soundtrack also reveals Waldron’s economy. Many cues are brief, but none feels incidental. Rather than over-explaining the film’s action, he trusts timbre and thematic recurrence: a compact horn figure can imply character; a bass line can turn a scene toward danger; a small piano motif can leave an emotional afterimage long after the cue ends. This sense of compression gives the record its distinctive momentum. It plays less like a conventional jazz session than a sequence of scenes cut with cinematic precision, yet its improvisers have enough room to make the drama breathe.
