Mal Waldron playing Charles Mingus is a better idea than it might sound. Both men built music out of insistence rather than decoration, both had a relationship with the blues that ran deeper than the surface of their writing suggested, and both spent their careers being described as difficult. Mingus Lives is Waldron's tribute, made for Enja in his long European period, and he approaches the compositions the way he approaches everything: slowly, heavily, repeating figures until they change meaning. The tunes hold up to that treatment better than most.
