September 1961, Stockholm: more from Eric Dolphy's first great European tour, issued by Enja - the Munich label that performed devoted archaeological service to the Dolphy legacy through the seventies and eighties, treating scattered European tapes with the editorial care of scripture scholars. The Swedish sessions catch him in the same inspired travelling form as the Copenhagen dates: pouring three instruments' worth of ideas over local rhythm sections, treating every stop on the tour like a major statement because for him there was simply no other way to play - the commitment was constitutional, not occasional. The Swedish players rise gamely to the occasion, and the tapes preserve that particular 1961 electricity: a revolutionary abroad, welcomed, working. European Dolphy is a genre of its own within the discography, and the Stockholm chapter is among its best recorded and most rewarding.
Japanese Enja pressing, handsome and quiet as expected from both traditions involved. Prime touring Dolphy, which is prime Dolphy.
