Two-thirds Art Ensemble plus one South African giant: Joseph Jarman and Don Moye with the great Johnny Dyani on bass, recorded 1979 for Black Saint - the Italian label that documented this music through the lean years with total commitment and a house pressing standard that collectors still trust on sight. The title states the program: warrior music, ceremonial and militant, Jarman's reeds and recitation moving over the deep African churn of Dyani's bass and Moye's percussion batteries, Chicago method and township pulse recognizing each other immediately as family. Dyani brings the Blue Notes inheritance - that singing, grieving, dancing low end - and the meeting elevates everyone involved. The AEC side projects are a rich territory of their own, often overshadowed by the mothership and rewarding everyone who explores them; this trio date is among the strongest of them all.
Italian pressing quality, serious music, highly recommended to anyone drawn to the spiritual end of the fire.
