The 1973 Tokyo solo session in its other Japanese Trio edition - same monumental music, later catalog dress, and the distinction matters only to those of us who enjoy such details, which around this shop is frankly everyone, staff included. Cecil Taylor alone: forty-some minutes of solo piano that plays like orchestral music, like percussion choir, like dance scored for ten fingers and two feet - everything except background listening, which it actively punishes. The 1973 Japan recordings form one of the great concentrated chapters in the entire discography: one visit, multiple masterpieces, taped by engineers who understood the assignment and released by a label that knew history when it heard it happening.
For those comparing editions, the pleasure is real; for those just wanting the music, either pressing delivers it whole. Second edition, same summit, same weather warning. The solo shelf needs this in some pressing - here is a fine one, and it will not wait long.
