Paris in the sixties, Cecil Taylor in concert with the Unit built around Jimmy Lyons - the first volume of the Great Paris Concert documentation, in a Japanese Trio pressing on the Freedom series. European concert halls gave Taylor what American clubs mostly would not: length, attention, decent pianos and acoustics worthy of music that thinks in continuous half-hour arcs and treats interruption as structural sabotage. The Paris material catches the group language in full development - the alto and piano in the decades-long dialogue that became one of the music's great partnerships, the structures unfolding with the logic of composition and the danger of total improvisation, neither ever yielding to the other. French audiences took Taylor seriously years before American institutions caught up, and the concert atmosphere carries that respect.
Concert Taylor from the heroic years, volume one of two, and the title does not oversell by a syllable. Japanese pressing quality throughout, as this label reliably delivered.
