Montreux 1975: Archie Shepp live with Charles Greenlee, Dave Burrell, Cameron Brown and Beaver Harris - the working mid-seventies band, mixing fire-period intensity with Shepp's deepening return to the tradition. This is the pivot era in his story: the ballads getting longer and more loving, the blues moving to the center, the free vocabulary now one tool among many rather than the whole kit. The Montreux stage catches the band stretching out in both directions at once, and the results argue that the pivot lost nothing and gained plenty. Japanese Trio pressing on the Freedom series, reliably quiet and solid.
