Gatefold sleeve.

1967: the side-long title track sets Archie Shepp's tenor against a battery of African percussion - eighteen-plus minutes of trance and fury, the horn riding wave after wave of polyrhythm like a preacher over a congregation in full cry. Among the most radical statements in the entire Impulse! catalog, and the purest distillation of Shepp's argument that the new music was not a rupture with Black tradition but its deepest continuation: field holler, ring shout, R&B and free jazz drawn as one unbroken line. A record that still sounds like the future, and one that DJs and diggers rediscover every decade on schedule. US pressing.
