1958, and one of the most beloved records in the whole Blue Note catalog: Cannonball Adderley's date with Miles Davis as sideman - in name only, since Miles shapes the session's every shadow, from tempos to trademark understatement - plus Hank Jones, Sam Jones and Art Blakey completing a band with no weak seat. The "Autumn Leaves" here is simply one of the canonical performances of recorded jazz: that suspended Miles introduction, that long exhale of a mood, Cannonball's entry like sunlight into a dark room - a sequence so perfect it has soundtracked sixty-five years of first encounters with this music. Blues authority and lyric restraint hold perfect proportion across the whole program, two giants pulling each other toward their best selves. Some records earn their ubiquity honestly; this one did, permanently, and still converts newcomers nightly somewhere in the world.
A cornerstone in any pressing, and always, always welcome in the shop.
